This illustration book, titled “Shuang Xi”(Double Happiness), explores the unsettling tradition of Ghost Marriage, intertwining eerie narratives with a critical examination of gender oppression.
Using color pencil illustrations and RISO printing, the book reinterprets this tradition through a horror lens, exposing its underlying social realities. The story follows a young woman forced into a ghost marriage - sold by her family to wed a deceased man. Seeking freedom, she takes her own life, yet even in death, she remains bound. Her body and spirit are once again sold, trapping her in an eternal existence within a family that never saw her as a person, only as property.
This book is serves as both a narrative and a confrontation - challenging viewers to question the intersections of tradition, power, and gender. It compels audiences to reflect on how patriarchal structure persist under cultural justification. Through this book, I seek to illuminate and resist the forces that continue to commodify women, urging a deeper awareness of autonomy and agency.
